Hidden in Plain Sight at Deep Run HS

Description

Do you know how to identify the signs of alcohol or drug use? It may be harder than you think.

"Hidden in Plain Sight" returns Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Deep Run High School for a free informative session for parents and guardians about the signs of substance abuse by teenagers and how to respond in proactive but healthy ways.

This event will also offer two invaluable resources for substance abuse awareness and overdose prevention:

  • Karleen Wolanin, the founder of Virginia Fentanyl and Substance Awareness, will speak about the importance of identifying and addressing mental health and substance use within our families. Karleen experienced the fentanyl crisis firsthand with her own daughter, and that experience led to Karleen working with local communities and even the Governor's Office to raise awareness.

  • Rapid 'REVIVE!' training for naloxone (also known as Narcan) will be offered by first responders and experts on site. When administered to someone having an opioid overdose emergency, naloxone temporarily blocks the effects of opioids and helps the person to breathe again. This simple medication and training saves lives every day.

Hidden in Plain Sight is a collaboration between HCPS Student Support and Wellness, the Henrico County Sheriff's Office, Henrico Too Smart 2 Start and Henrico Prevention Services. It's hosted by Deep Run High School and Short Pump Middle School.

All parents and guardians across Henrico are invited to attend.
